This new larger still life was inspired by an 11x14" painting I did 10 years ago in December 2013, Still Life with Figs, Bleu Cheese, and Temmoku Bottle (the light, the shade), which you can see here. The 2023 composition is loosely a mirror of the one from 2013. If you missed it: last week, I conducted my annual live painting demonstration in my studio (instead of Grey Towers Castle at Arcadia University). The event was open to the public and streamed live at arcadia.edu/abbeyryanlive (note: YouTube has temporarily blocked the video due to copyright issues with music that was playing in the background, but this will be resolved. In the meantime, you can watch it here). This painting (and my live demo) honors the memory of my friend, Jami. The painting is larger than my typical auction paintings and all proceeds from this auction will be donated to the Jami Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship at Arcadia. Read more.

Thank you for tuning in to my live demo. I'm honored that so many painters, friends, family, Arcadia students, alums, faculty, staff, and administrators watched and live chatted. We received comments from an Arcadia alum from 2017 and the family of a new Arcadia student who will be starting in Fall 2020. Afterwards, an Arcadia alum sent me a photo of her son painting along with me "using my brush technique" (holding it at the end). I received an amazing photo of a family eating popcorn and watching my live demo on a big screen. Art critic Jerry Saltz tweeted during my demo and took a quick look (check out his new book). I thanked (in Portuguese) a viewer watching in Portugal. And Zuca, laying on my feet, snored through it all!

Golden Series: Sliced Peach, Dutch Cheese, and Italian Plums (+ artists going to the moon?)



If you're interested, SpaceX's first moon voyage customer, Yusaku Maezawa, will be to flying around the moon in 2023 and he is going to bring 6-8 artists with him:

This is the 14th painting in my Golden Series. The pear and concord grapes came from my in-laws' beautiful farmer's market in Fairport, NY. Also, I'm always grateful to our local co-op for working with local farmers to offer the beautiful fruit I often paint, and this painting especially was inspired by Weaver's Way Co-op.

Red Grapes with Tuscan Parmesan (Italy 2015 painting #6)

In 2012 when I was in Italy, I painted a very similar painting of Tuscan parmesan and red grapes in Perugia, and I had that painting in mind when I found this Tuscan parmesan in Rome last month. When I revisit subject matter such as this, for me, it adds to the visual diary of my painting travels.

The auction for Italian Clementine with Leaf from Testaccio Market, Rome ends soon, and to the right is a photo of me at the easel painting the Italian clementine with the beautiful light coming into my room in the Testaccio neighborhood in Rome.

(I also painted today's painting and my Tomatoes on the Vine, Rome (Italy 2015 painting #5) in that same spot.)

Italian Pecorino and Green Olives from an Assisi Market (Italy 2015 painting #2)

During my Italy travels, I first spent several days in Assisi. I had been there once before -- only for a day trip -- and felt drawn to it. I knew that I wanted to go back to paint and just spend more time. We stayed in a small flat about two minutes (actually, 99 steps) up the hill from Piazza del Comune, which is the main square of Assisi. I got these green olives in my favorite market just across the piazza, and I found this beautiful cheese in a little wine and cheese shop not far from the Basilica of Saint Francis. It's hard to see in the reproduction of the painting here, but in the reflections on the olives, I could actually see the church tower outside my window. Anyway, to the right is a photo of this painting on the easel, and you can see more of my Italy photos here.

This is one of my two demo paintings from my Artists of Yardley workshop this past weekend. It was a fabulous, soulful group of twelve artists -- such wonderful people! It was an honor to work with each of them. I've gotten feedback about that workshop from a few participants, and although it is mostly for my own personal use to reflect on and improve on my teaching, I can share a bit of it:

A quick cheese fact: Fourme d'Ambert is one of France's oldest cheeses, and dates from as far back as Roman times.

This past weekend, I taught my workshop at the John F. Peto Studio Museum. It was amazing and I am working on a post about it. In the meantime, I recently added a new testimonial from a participant in my Private Painting Mentoring online. Here's an excerpt:
