Still Life with Silver Pitcher, Two Strawberries, & Concord Grape (Live Demo Painting)

Still Life with Silver Pitcher, Two Strawberries, and Concord Grape (Live Demo Painting)
6x7 inches, oil on linen on panel, 2 November 2018

If you're interested, I received this note from an artist who tuned in:

"I loved the whole demo. Thank you. Your live demo was wonderful and so generous to us all. I will gladly watch it over and over because there's always something to learn. Knowing something of your technique -- painting with the one brush, controlling amount of paint, using paper to keep brush clean -- it was a great reminder of your what I call controlled painting freedom. Of course you're working with lots of past knowledge, but to see the image appear, so quickly, clearer and clearer, was exciting, really. I absolutely mean it that I will watch it again and again. What a gift to your followers."

On Friday, Nov 2, I conducted a live painting demonstration in Grey Towers Castle at Arcadia University. The event was open to the public and streamed live in HD at arcadia.edu/livepaint. This painting (and my live demo) honors the memory of my friend, Jami. The painting is larger than my typical auction paintings and all proceeds from this auction will be donated to the Jami Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship at Arcadia. Read more. Also, if you look closely, there's one of my self portrait of sorts down the middle of the pitcher's reflections.

I posted photos from the event on FB and insta (check back because I'll be adding more), and I invite you to watch the full recording of my live demo (short time lapse coming soon):

If you're interested, this article "She Gave Millions to Artists Without Credit. Until Now" is about Susan Unterberg, who has revealed her identity after anonymously giving $5.5 million to female artists over the last 22 years:

"The donor behind the prize wanted to remain unknown. But now she is stepping out from behind the curtain: Susan Unterberg, herself a once underrecognized female artist over 40. In a recent interview at her Upper East Side home, she said she has decided to come forward so that she can more openly argue on behalf of women who are artists, demonstrate the importance of women supporting women and try to inspire other philanthropists." 24-hour auction ends at 7:30PM EST on Tues, Oct 17

This is the 14th painting in my Golden Series. The pear and concord grapes came from my in-laws' beautiful farmer's market in Fairport, NY. Also, I'm always grateful to our local co-op for working with local farmers to offer the beautiful fruit I often paint, and this painting especially was inspired by Weaver's Way Co-op.

If you visit my blog regularly, you know that I often write or share about things like mindful practice in the studio. "The Muddied Meaning of ‘Mindfulness’" is an interesting article by Virginia Heffernan about recent uses of terms like "mindful" and "mindfulness" in Western culture. [Read article]

Still Life with Fig and Concord Grapes No. 2 (+ Leonardo da Vinci)

Right now, I'm co-teaching a course with a leading Leonardo da Vinci scholar about the history and practice of drawing, beginning with the Renaissance. Dr. Jill Pederson and I created this unique cross-disciplinary course, so I will make a note to share more about it later.

Last week, we taught our students about Leonardo and his nature studies, which I often study and think about in my own work. I'll write more on Leonardo later, but I realized that I haven't yet shared a review of my recent solo exhibition at Gleason Fine Art. Here it is:

"Philadelphia artist ABBEY RYAN makes some of the most exquisite still life paintings you will ever see. Her background includes undergraduate and graduate work in both fine art and medicine, a combination that would have been understood and appreciated by such great Renaissance artists as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo."

P.S. If you're interested, just about 6 years ago I painted another fig and concord grapes daily painting.

Still life with John F. Peto's Copper Jug, Clementine, and Concord Grapes (+ Peto Museum Workshop Recap)

Collection of the Peto Museum

Two weeks ago, I taught a workshop at one of my favorite places: the John F. Peto Studio Museum.

I'm a bit speechless about all aspects of the experience painting and teaching at the Peto Museum, but setting up one of Peto's still life objects in my own still life set up was by far the highlight for me. Painting Peto's copper jug was surreal, and at the same time I felt grounded in his studio space and deeply connected to his artistic energy. It was truly an honor.

If you're interested, I found photos of a couple of Peto's paintings of the jug that I painted. Below is his painting "Pots and Pans" from c. 1880, which I found in the catalog Important Information Inside: The Art of John F. Peto and the Idea of Still-Life Painting in Nineteenth-Century America, by John Wilmerding, Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art, 1983. The exhibition featured sixty-one paintings by John F. Peto.

Here are photos of my painting demo, more of Peto's paintings, and the workshop.

Tomorrow, I'll post my other demo painting for auction and a bit more about the workshop.

Two other related thoughts:

1- My three latest trompe l'oeil paintings are on view at the Peto Museum through the end of December 2013. Here is a preview of the exhibition and artist reception.

2- In case you missed it, Art & Antiques Magazine published a fabulous article about the Peto Museum in last month's issue.

Concord Grapes with Valdeón Blue (Made in Spain) (+ My Upcoming Travels to Spain)

(5-day auction ends at 12noon EDT on Monday, Oct. 21st)

Today's painting is inspired by my upcoming travels to Barcelona and Madrid. This blue cheese caught my eye as a painting subject because it is beautifully wrapped in leaves. Other than finding its appearance appealing, I didn't know anything about it, so I decided to read up on it. Here's what I learned about Valdeón Blue (made in Spain by Mitica) from the importer Forever Cheese's site:
"Valdeón Blue cheese is made deep in the Picos de Europa, just outside of the province of León. Produced with cow and goat’s milk, Valdeón is sought after because it is milder than DOP Cabrales and is still characteristically wrapped in leaves which make for an appealing presentation. It has an excellent balance of sweet and tangy, with a nice earthiness at the finish."
I haven't tasted it yet, but Valdeón Blue was excellent to paint. ;-)

While I am traveling in Spain to paint, I will also be looking at workshop venues to teach a possible "A Painting a Day" workshop in summer 2014. So, I am wondering: would you like to paint with me in Spain? If so, please email me to let me know you're interested. (I'm also considering a summer workshop in Italy, too. Before I post about what's on my mind today, I want to share that the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia is hosting an open house tomorrow. I was introduced to the CCAHA last November when I had them repair my dad's first edition copy of The Tower of Babel by Thomas Merton (with woodcuts by Gerhard Marcks, a noted Bauhaus artist) and published in 1957. They did a fabulous job, and the CCAHA is a pretty amazing place to visit. The projects they've completed are remarkable.

Anyway, the open house is happening to celebrate their 35 years of preserving the world's cultural heritage (hundreds of thousands of paper-based artifacts, including historic manuscripts, rare books, beautiful fine art, and fragile photographs). More information on the behind-the-scenes tour here.

Last but not least, I want to share with you this song by David Mallett (introduced to me by my dad :). You can watch Mallett perform it here.

It's called "Artist In Me." I believe we are all artists, in some form, somewhere inside.
Why do I fly why do I fall
It must be the artist in me
Guess it's just the artist in me
Why am I amazed at the wonder of it all
Guess it's just the artist in me

This is another painting from my (fairly) new Golden SeriesRead more about it here. If you'd like, leave a comment or tweet about it.

During my day at the National Gallery in D.C. (part I post here), in addition to seeing memorable works by Peto, Heda, Mignon, Dietrich, Peale, Haberle, Charles Porter, W. M. Hartnett, Whistler, Twachtman, Eakins, and Bricher.... I spent time looking at the exhibition, "Elegance and Refinement: The Still-Life Paintings of Willem van Aelst" -- which I'm sorry to say just closed yesterday.

Although I can appreciate van Aelst's larger, complex compositions (and velvety textures!), for me, the highlight of the exhibition was what, I think, was his earliest painting in the exhibit: a small, intimate still life. I believe it was from when he was 16 or 17 years old. No photos were allowed, but I found one online here. (The colors in the photo are mostly wrong, but you get the idea.)

Here's some info on van Aelst from the National Gallery's site:
"Few artists were more skilled than Willem van Aelst (1627–1683) at depicting luscious fruits, luxurious fabrics, and spoils of the hunt. His renowned still lifes are remarkable for their fine finish, carefully balanced composition, jewel-toned palette, and elegant subject matter. Bringing together 28 of these sumptuous paintings and his only known drawing, this exhibition—the first devoted solely to this artist—celebrates the most technically brilliant Dutch still-life painter of his time. It is also accompanied by the first comprehensive publication on his work." [Link]
Finally, my two other highlights of the day were Dishes with Oysters, Fruit, and Wine by Osias Beert the Elder (1625) and Still Life with Sweets and Pottery by Juan Van Der Hamen Y Leon (1627).

Concord Grapes (& My Thoughts on D.C.'s National Gallery)

Last week, I spent the day at the National Gallery in D.C. (more on that below), and today's painting is inspired by my curiosity about a somewhat unassuming Joseph Decker painting I saw there. As I was painting this, I found myself also connecting to something else -- quite different -- that I created almost ten years ago when I was a student at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. It's an unexpected connection that I will probably continue to think about.... See for yourself here.

I love the "vibe" at the National Gallery (the atmosphere reminds me a little bit of the Uffizi in Florence) and, as I'm sure we all do, I hope that the inspiration I felt there stays with me as long as I can hold onto it. Today I'll share a bit about the John Frederick Peto works I saw (background info here), and I'll write about the works by Dutch painter Willem van Aelst in my next post.

John Frederick Peto's paintings continue to capture my attention. (I've been told that Peto is the best inspiration that a still life painter can have -- I'm still mulling that one over.) A definite highlight of the day was a tiny room full of still life treasures, including five Peto paintings (pictured right). Peto's compositional decisions challenge me a great deal, but I admire his ability to embrace and harness tension. I also admire a type of restraint present in his paintings: they are reserved, yet also overflowing with a genuine and sincere approach to the subjects. When I look at this paintings, I feel a sense of discovery that Peto must have felt.

His paintings are "filled with so much affection and no affectation" (I'm told). Therein lies a challenge for many of those who walk on the long path of the classical 'still life.' I know I will need to spend my life painting to even begin to understand this. In the meantime, I'm humbled and very thankful that painting makes for joyous days.

If you'd like, leave me a comment here or tweet about this painting.

Still Life with Pear Half and Concord Grapes

This painting evolved as I was making my lunch. I was cutting up a ripe yellow pear to put in my salad, and was struck by the color inside the pear and had to immediately paint it. (In looking at the painting now, I can't help but remember my Still Life with Fig and Concord Grapes painting from three years ago.) Anyway, I rarely eat what I paint, but as I was setting this up, I tasted a concord grape. Then I tried another. And then another. They were delicious and I will tell you that I am lucky I ended up with any grapes left to paint!

If you enjoy this painting, please leave your thoughts in a comment.
