In the distance (on the right) is Chora, the capital of Patmos. My earlier painting chora reflected in farm door, noon (the light / the shade) shows another distant view of Chora. The land mass across from the beach where I was painting is the islet Agios Giorgios (St. George) named after the small white church there (look to the left). After I painted this under the shade of a Tamarisk tree, I swam across to the beach below the white church.

kohlakoura beach, lipsi, greece (the light / the shade)

Robert Lax's three favorite Greek islands were Kalymnos, Lipsi, and Patmos (where I spent time painting). Lipsi is the smallest of the three, at about 6 square miles, and there's only 1 taxi on the island. It's a 25 minute ferry ride from Patmos and we went there twice while staying on Patmos. On one visit, we met Yanni, a former sponge diver, and a passerby helped translate a conversation. We learned that Yanni actually knew Lax (here's a photo of Yanni). Kohlakoura is a white pebble beach (another photo here). My Greece snapshots are a bit out of order, but those links give a glimpse of it.

In this painting I used a little bit of an interesting Vasari color that's not usually on my palette: Video Blue Extra Pale (click on the name to see a photo of it on Lipsi). It's a vibrant and delicate cool blue -- like an opaque bluish white that's chromatic enough for complementary mixing with warm yellow/orange/earth colors.

It just opened for registration and space is limited to 12. Join today to reserve your spot. "If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other."
~ Mother Teresa

Today's painting of an olive branch (which I picked) is part of my ongoing painting series, the light / the shade, inspired by American poet Robert Lax's book-length poem, the light / the shade (pendo verlag, 1989). I painted it on the island of Patmos, Greece while creating work for my Johnston Fellowship research. While hand-picked olive branch, patmos, greece (the light / the shade) is not included in my exhibition in the Harrison Gallery at Arcadia University, the exhibition includes 14 paintings and will be on view from now through June 16, 2018.

My gallery talk for the community at Arcadia (also open to the public) will be this Thursday, April 19 at 4pm in the Harrison Gallery, University Commons, with a reception to follow. I will post the gallery notes / press release and share Greece landscape and still life paintings in the exhibition in the coming days.

Generous support for my the light / the shade work from June 2016 – June 2018 is provided by the inaugural Dr. Norman Johnston Faculty Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Arcadia University.*

Over the past year, I'm grateful to have had an invaluable ongoing dialogue with Paul Spaeth, Curator of the Robert Lax Archives and Library Director, Rare Books & Special Collections Librarian at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY (Robert Lax's hometown). I visited the Robert Lax archives last fall as part of my research, and Paul Spaeth has been instrumental in certain aspects of my research as well as the exhibition planning. I am also honored that in Spring 2019 my exhibition the light / the shade will travel to New York and be on view in the gallery at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University, Olean, NY. More details to come.

If you've followed my blog, my the light / the shade paintings are part of my daily painting work and are inspired by Robert Lax's minimalist poetry and Lax's contemplative life on Patmos, Greece (one of the oldest known penal colonies in history – a particular detail that connects to the work of Dr. Norman Johnson, for whom the fellowship is named). If you're not familiar, I first wrote about Robert Lax as the inspiration for my the light / the shade paintings here.

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see more paintings from my the light / the shade series.

*The Dr. Norman Johnston Faculty Fellowship was endowed by the estate of Dr. Norman Johnston to encourage talented and dedicated faculty members to excel in research and scholarship in the humanities and social sciences and to share their knowledge with the University community. The fellowship promotes the values of Professor Emeritus Norman Johnston, who understood the central role of faculty in the education process, the open exchange of ideas, and the engagement of the entire University community. Dr. Johnston joined Arcadia in 1962 and was an international expert on the history of prison architecture. He taught at the University for 30 years, retiring in 1992. Dr. Johnston passed away in October 2012 at the age of 91.

Upcoming solo exhibition
In August 2018, I'll be mounting a solo exhibition of new larger paintings at Gleason Fine Art in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. If you are nearby, I will be at the artist reception on Friday evening, August 3. A bit about Gleason Fine Art: "Established in 1985, Gleason Fine Art has become a fixture.... In addition to selling 19th through 20th century art, Gleason Fine Art offers collection consulting, art appraisals, and restoration services. From the beginning, their goal has been to offer the finest work by established painters and sculptors..."

If you're interested, here's an excerpt from a recent email I got from a collector of my work:

"I have a friend who is a painter and I have 4 of her paintings, a series named The Singers. The paintings are of an amazing opera singer performing on stage. My friend tried to paint what she saw in the opera singer's performance. She told me that the opera singer's voice and performance captured 'the great all.' Dear Abbey, your work feels that way to me—it captures the 'great all.'"

On a related note, I often get emailed questions about selling artwork online. It's such a multi-layered and complex topic that I find it's easier to discuss in person in my workshops/seminars or mentoring program. As much as possible, I try to share with others the ways in which the internet enables artists to thrive. There are so many of avenues for artists, and the best one(s) depend on who you are. For me: in addition to juried exhibitions, museums, and galleries, since 2007 I've sold my small paintings on eBay because it's a universal and easy-to-use auction platform that allows me to share my work with collectors all over the world. As a result, my work is in more than 1300 private and public art collections on six continents. There are many other selling platforms, but eBay is what I've always used; plus, four years ago, I posted that Sotheby's initiated a partnership with eBay.
