Small Vine Tomatoes in a Handmade Bowl (+ 2 more exhibitions)

As part of my interest in handmade pottery and my ongoing paintings of handmade pottery series, this tiny saucer/bowl is handmade by potter Willi Singleton. Here I painted another piece made by him.

If you're interested, my 14"x18" painting Hand-picked Apples (Together Forever) was accepted into the Oil Painters of America (OPA) international Juried Salon Show of Traditional Oils on view at Crooked Tree Arts Center, Traverse City, Michigan from June 22 – September 1, 2018. For the show, the Juror is OPA Master Signature Member Roger Dale Brown.

This same painting was also accepted into the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society (NOAPS) International Spring Juried Competition, juried by Barbara Nuss, NOAPS Signature Artist. For that show, there were 150 paintings accepted from the over 890 paintings entered.

Still Life with Antique Dominoes

This is my first painting in my new studio. It was an enormous project to renovate it and I'm thoroughly exhausted, but I'm incredibly grateful for and happy with the space. I'll share more about it all later  -- I still have a lot of unpacking and setting up to do. In the meantime, I found these amazing antique dominoes in the basement of my studio, so it seemed fitting to paint them first. Still Life with Bird's Egg, Apple with Leaves, and Ike's Handmade Vase (+ update on auctions)

Back in May, I asked for your comments on using auction sites. Thank you for all your replies! The overwhelming response was that eBay auctions are the easiest. However, if you don't use eBay, I usually have a small group of available non-auction paintings. Email me to inquire.

Anyway, there were a few questions regarding last minute bidding. I think the best answer is that eBay has a built-in proxy system that allows bidders to enter their pre-determined maximum bid. All you do is enter your maximum bid and let the auction proceed. From eBay's site: "If the auction ends for less than your maximum, that's all you'll have to pay. eBay will only use as much of your bid as necessary to win. Just enter your highest maximum bid once, and eBay will take care of the bidding for you." One comment I received about max bids was this: "stick what you are willing to pay as a hidden max bid and be done with it." That said, if you're interested, another commenter told me that eBay does allow people to use online auction "sniping" sites to assist them with end-of-auction bidding. I have never used one, so do your due diligence if you decide to try it.

Peeled Tangerine and Handmade Korean Bowl (+ Exhibition near Austin, TX)

Baroque painters (i.e. Velázquez, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer...) often depicted a dramatic moment using light & dark (chiaroscuro), and I think it is human nature to go towards (the) light. In my own work, I enjoy sharing a way of looking at the world by capturing a moment (of light) as it is happening -- however dramatic or subtle or simple it may be.

Wabi Sabi Korean Bowl (+ "On the Soul-Sustaining Necessity of Resisting Self-Comparison")

I brought this amazing and unique wabi sabi handmade bowl back with me from South Korea in 2013. Wabi sabi is not easily described in words, but when I teach my workshops and private painting mentoring online, I often share my thoughts on handmade objects, and the spirit and gesture embedded in them. If you're interested, Wabi-Sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers by Leonard Koren is the seminal 1994 classic volume on the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. This painting is part of my Paintings of Handmade Pottery work, here's another wabi sabi bowl of mine from Patagonia, Arizona, and here's a 2013 post of mine about wabi sabi.

Renowned writer Maria Popova recently delivered the commencement address to the 2016 graduating class at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication, her alma mater. I wanted to share an excerpt with you:

"Whatever your specific vocation, your role as a creator of culture will be to help people discern what matters in the world and why by steering them away from the meaningless and toward the meaningful. E.B. White said that the role of the writer is to lift people up, not to lower them down, and I believe that’s the role of every journalist and artist and creator of culture. 

Strive to be uncynical, to be a hope-giving force, to be a steward of substance. Choose to lift people up, not to lower them down — because it is a choice, always, and because in doing so you lift yourself up. 

Develop an inner barometer for your own value. Resist pageviews and likes and retweets and all those silly-sounding quantification metrics that will be obsolete within the decade. Don’t hang the stability of your soul on them. They can’t tell you how much your work counts for and to whom. They can’t tell you who you are and what you’re worth. They are that demoralizing electric bike that makes you feel if only you could pedal faster — if only you could get more pageviews and likes and retweets — you’d be worthier of your own life." I'm pleased to announce my annual live painting demo. Next Friday, April 1st, I'm conducting a live demonstration of my daily painting in Grey Towers Castle at Arcadia University from 11am to 1pm EST.

The session is free and open to the public for anyone who can come person, and the event will be streamed live at http://www.arcadia.edu/livepaint (Arcadia's UStream channel).

The demo painting will be posted on my blog and sold by auction, with the proceeds to benefit the Jami Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship at Arcadia. Jami and I became friends as art students and members of Arcadia's (Beaver's) Student Alumni Association together, and I remember her as an amazing artist and magnetic friend. I'd like to raise awareness about this Scholarship to honor Jami and her legacy of community service, artistic creativity, and love for Beaver College (Arcadia).

Arcadia's Castle is a fantastic historic landmark. I hope that you will consider joining me next Friday!

Handmade Yunomi

A yunomi (Japanese: 湯のみ) is a form of teacup, typically made from a ceramic material, being taller than wide. Unlike the more formal chawan tea bowl which is used during the Japanese tea ceremony, the yunomi is made for daily (or informal) tea drinking. [source]

This painting continues my paintings of handmade pottery project that I began back in 2008. This yunomi was made by Sequoia Miller. I have a collection of several of Sequoia's works, and I think he's not currently making any more pottery.
