This new larger still life was inspired by an 11x14" painting I did 10 years ago in December 2013, Still Life with Figs, Bleu Cheese, and Temmoku Bottle (the light, the shade), which you can see here. The 2023 composition is loosely a mirror of the one from 2013. I've been painting this bottle since before 2009 and the last time I painted it was in November 2020. (The last time I painted a pomegranate was also in 2020.) This bottle is handmade with tenmoku glaze by Sequoia Miller. #potsinaction #paintingsofhandmadepottery

Handmade Yunomi

A yunomi (Japanese: 湯のみ) is a form of teacup, typically made from a ceramic material, being taller than wide. Unlike the more formal chawan tea bowl which is used during the Japanese tea ceremony, the yunomi is made for daily (or informal) tea drinking. [source]

This painting continues my paintings of handmade pottery project that I began back in 2008. This yunomi was made by Sequoia Miller. I have a collection of several of Sequoia's works, and I think he's not currently making any more pottery.

I want to share with you two of the most memorable works of art I've seen in 2013. First, I'd like to write a special thanks to artist Charles Ritchie, whose fabulous work and compelling artist lecture I wrote about on my blog in August 2012. I admire Charlie's work and find a genuine camaraderie with his daily practice -- a studio practice that he describes as being more about loving what he does every day than just a commitment to a discipline. This really resonated with me. As I mentioned last year, Charlie is also (since 1988) Associate Curator of Department of Modern Prints and Drawings, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.

This painting is part of my "Paintings of Handmade Pottery" project. Read about it here. This is the same bottle made by Sequoia Miller that I've painted a few times before (Still Life with Fig and Tenmoku Bottle, Still Life with Egg and Tenmoku Bottle, and Still Life with Tomato and Tenmoku Bottle). Unlike those paintings, this painting was done with early morning light.

I've painted this bottle a couple of times recently, and this is the first painting that shows the entire bottle. It's a handmade bottle with tenmoku glaze made by an amazing West coast artist, Sequoia Miller. Sequoia had an exhibition this past summer here in Philadelphia at the Works Gallery, and I was lucky enough to acquire two of his bottles. Please take a moment to check out Sequoia's work -- it's captivating. Sequoia told me by email that it's rare for him to make a "round" bottle (usually his are angular), so I feel fortunate to have this and one other bottle (that I have not painted yet). I am very interested in the dynamic of working with living ceramic artists, painting their functional (and non-functional) pottery. As I painted this, I thought to myself, "Morandi would have loved Sequoia's work."
