Still Life with Copper Bowl and Three Eggs (Homage to Chardin, 1732)

Still Life with Copper Bowl and Three Eggs (Homage to Chardin, 1732), oil on linen on panel, 8x10"
Sold

These three eggs (and feather) were a gift from our neighbors who have chickens. In warm weather, their chickens often roam free and sometimes wander into our backyard. When my window is open, I can hear them scratching around for bugs all the way up on the third floor.

This painting composition is an homage to Jean Siméon Chardin and his still life from 1732, in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. From the DIA website: "Chardin was already famous by 1730 when he started painting small still lifes of kitchen utensils. In this work, the artist pared down the elements to a few, simple objects. Chardin typically used the same elements in other compositions, varying slightly the position of the objects or adding or subtracting a utensil. Hailed as a visionary artist, Chardin is nonetheless rooted in the art of eighteenth-century France, and the metaphysical quality of his compositions (as seen through modern eyes) does not mean that they are timeless. They bring the viewer instead into an earthly world and into the creative process of one of the greatest French painters of all time."

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see Still Life with Copper Pot and Pears (the light, the shade), other paintings I've done of copper objects and eggs, or a bunch of my paintings of gifts that have been given to me.

still life with copper pot and pears (the light, the shade), patmos, greece
oil on linen on panel, 2017, 8"x10"
Private Collection
Print available here.

Starting this Friday, Still Life with Copper Pot and Pears (the light, the shade) will be on view in a juried museum exhibition "Perspectives of the American Experience" at the Rockwell Museum, Corning, NY. The exhibition runs from January 19 - April 22, 2018. The Rockwell Museum exhibition was juried by Kirsty Buchanan, Curator of Collection, Rockwell Museum and Dr. Constance Sullivan-Blum, former Director, the ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes. From their website: "This highly competitive and tightly-curated exhibit will showcase a diverse group of representational artworks by artists who draw, paint or sculpt in a contemporary or traditional style that fit the theme of "Perspectives of the American Experience." #awarockwell

This painting is part of my ongoing series "the light, the shade" and I painted it on Patmos, Greece while creating my work for my Johnston Fellowship research and upcoming exhibition (more details later). Generous support for my "the light, the shade" series from June 2016-June 2018 is provided by the Norman Johnston Fellowship at Arcadia University.*

If you've followed my blog, my "the light, the shade" paintings are part of my daily painting work and are inspired by American poet Robert Lax's minimalist poetry, Lax's contemplative life on Patmos, Greece (one of the oldest known penal colonies in history), and Dr. Norman Johnston’s writings on “monastic imprisonment.” If you're not familiar, I first wrote about Robert Lax as the inspiration for my "the light, the shade" paintings here.

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see my paintings from my "the light, the shade" series.

*The Dr. Norman Johnston Faculty Fellowship was endowed by the estate of Dr. Norman Johnston to encourage talented and dedicated faculty members to excel in research and scholarship in the humanities and social sciences and to share their knowledge with the University community. The fellowship promotes the values of Professor Emeritus Norman Johnston, who understood the central role of faculty in the education process, the open exchange of ideas, and the engagement of the entire University community. Dr. Johnston joined Arcadia in 1962 and was an international expert on the history of prison architecture. He taught at the University for 30 years, retiring in 1992. Three D'Anjou Pears in a Copper Bowl (Separation of Powers)

Sold

If you're interested, this painting is the second in my "separation of powers" series. James Madison was the fourth President of the United States from 1809-17. He is known as the "Father of the Constitution," and was the last of the founding fathers to serve as President. Published in New York Packet on January 30, 1788, James Madison wrote, 'The Particular Structure of the New Government and the Distribution of Power Among Its Different Parts' -- also known as Federalist 47. Due to the confusion of the concept of separation of powers at the citizen level, Madison examines the separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government under the then-proposed United States Constitution. Also, "the Constitution does not explicitly indicate the pre-eminence of any particular branch of government. However, James Madison wrote in Federalist 51, regarding the ability of each branch to defend itself from actions by the others, that 'it is not possible to give to each department an equal power of self-defense. In republican government, the legislative authority necessarily predominates. One may claim that the judiciary has historically been the weakest of the three branches.....'" [Keep reading]

If you're interested in reading about the origin of separation of powers in government, my first post is here. Wikipedia also weighs in here.

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see Lemon with Three Leaves (Separation of Powers), or a bunch of my paintings of copper bowls, a single pear, or multiple pears.

Cherries on a Copper Plate (+ The Radical Power of Humility)

My Innernet course earlier this month was again really excellent -- with a truly wonderful and soulful group of participants. If you're interested, I plan to offer the Innernet again in June. In the meantime, you may enjoy this talk entitled "The Radical Power of Humility." Here's an excerpt:

"Years ago, I sat down for lunch, next to a young villager in India. As usual, I closed my eyes for a moment of gratitude before eating. As I opened them, I saw the most unusual thing -- this boy was preparing a bite from my plate. My plate! Seeing my confusion, he kindly explained, “I wanted a piece of your prayer, and so I figured the best thing was to be of service to it right now.” Saying this, he offered me that bite. Imagine hearing these words, and receiving that gesture from someone you’ve only just met..." [Keep reading]

Important Notice

Every day, I receive emails from my subscribers about the ways in which my "Painting a Day" brings both joy and a welcomed respite from work, stress, life, and so on. Your interest in my work makes what I do possible (again, thank you).

I have seen over the past 8 years that the nature of email is constantly changing. I'm told that my 1-week e-course The Innernet provides a much-needed reconnection to inspiration and a recalibration of focus (aka digital detox).

Likewise, in the spirit of an "inbox detox," if you find yourself just deleting my "Painting a Day" or marking the emails as spam or feeling like unsubscribing, it is easy to do so.

I now have 3 email lists: A Painting a DAY, A Painting a WEEK, or A Painting a MONTH.
(Sign up for only ONE of the email lists so you don't get duplicate emails. Everything I send for the daily emails will go out just once a week in the weekly email, and once a month in the monthly email. If you do not want to miss my painting auctions, I'd suggest the daily email (which I really send out only 4-5 times a week). The weekly and monthly emails are better for folks who are not really often planning on purchasing any work via auctions.)

Click here to choose your preferred email list to get exactly what you want (or don't want)

IF YOU'RE ALREADY SUBSCRIBED, check your email today -- you can change your preferred email list by clicking on the "Update Profile" link at the bottom of every email I send.

Hand-picked Strawberries on a Copper Plate

The owner of this new painting just said to me today, "In 300 years, your paintings will be used to show what fruit looked like when we lived." And she shared with me this interesting link: A 17th-Century Stanchi Painting Reveals the Rapid Change in Watermelons through Selective Breeding.

FYI: I mentioned it the other day, and I will be announcing my new Mindful Studio Practice Scholarship this Tuesday, so keep an eye out.

Copper Plate (& One of My Favorite Places to Paint)

This week, I'm thinking about all those affected by the hurricane.

Having grown up there, one of my all-time favorite places to paint is at the beach in New Jersey. I painted just about all of my seascape paintings in Avon and Belmar.

If you'd like, please leave a comment below.

Best,

P.S. This is my first time painting copper, I think. I just found this copper bowl at a pretty interesting place called Terrain, in Glen Mills, PA. I think Terrain succeeded in not feeling like a designed-vintaged-repurposed-stuff shop (although that's what it is), and I posted a few photos of it over on facebook. If you're in the area, I recommend it.
