Still Life with Copper Bowl and Three Eggs (Homage to Chardin, 1732)

Still Life with Copper Bowl and Three Eggs (Homage to Chardin, 1732), oil on linen on panel, 8x10"
Sold

These three eggs (and feather) were a gift from our neighbors who have chickens. In warm weather, their chickens often roam free and sometimes wander into our backyard. When my window is open, I can hear them scratching around for bugs all the way up on the third floor.

This painting composition is an homage to Jean Siméon Chardin and his still life from 1732, in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. From the DIA website: "Chardin was already famous by 1730 when he started painting small still lifes of kitchen utensils. In this work, the artist pared down the elements to a few, simple objects. Chardin typically used the same elements in other compositions, varying slightly the position of the objects or adding or subtracting a utensil. Hailed as a visionary artist, Chardin is nonetheless rooted in the art of eighteenth-century France, and the metaphysical quality of his compositions (as seen through modern eyes) does not mean that they are timeless. They bring the viewer instead into an earthly world and into the creative process of one of the greatest French painters of all time."

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see Still Life with Copper Pot and Pears (the light, the shade), other paintings I've done of copper objects and eggs, or a bunch of my paintings of gifts that have been given to me.

Best,

Cracked Egg (+ sharing the concept of "One Hour / One Painting")

Click to view auction 24-hour auction

Recently, two of my mentoring participants specifically asked me for help in painting cracked eggs and PB&Js and other gooey things, so I thought I would revisit this popular daily painting subject. It seems I paint a cracked egg about once a year or so.

I wanted to share this article that a follower of this blog sent to me about Peter Clothier's book, Slow Looking, in which he "describes and elaborates 'One Hour/One Painting' sessions, an idea he developed to practice a different, more profound and more rewarding way of looking at art. It combines the practices of meditation and contemplation, asking participants to sit for a full hour in front of a single work of art. Slow Looking and 'One Hour/One Painting' are about learning to drop the baggage of prejudice and expectation at the door and taking time to really examine what is actually there..." Of course, this all reminded me of my motivations in developing my Innernet e-course (next session is January 2016 if you're interested). Clothier's “The Art of Looking” is an exercise in seeing. The idea was developed from the observation that viewers, in museums and galleries, spend an average of six seconds in front of any given art work, and often spend more time with the identifying label than with the work itself. Regarding my 3 email lists: A Painting a DAY, A Painting a WEEK, or A Painting a MONTH:

Be sure to sign up for only ONE of the email lists -- everything I send for the daily emails goes out just once a week in the weekly email, and once a month in the monthly email. If you do not want to miss my painting auctions, the daily email is your best bet (I really send it out only about 4 times a week). The weekly and monthly emails are better for folks who are not often purchasing my work via auctions.

IF YOU'RE ALREADY SUBSCRIBED, check your email today -- you can change your preferred email list by clicking on the "Update Profile" link at the bottom of every email I send.

In late June, I was fortunate to see Sam Green’s newest "live documentary" The Measure of All Things. I loved it -- it was fantastic -- combining a film screening with Green's in-person live narration and a soundtrack played live by the ensemble yMusic. Loosely inspired by the Guinness Book of Records, The Measure of All Things weaves together a series of portraits of record-holding people, places, and things. You can do a web search to find the trailer for the film, but it really was the most incredible thing to experience in person the film, live narration, and live orchestra-soundtrack-performance together as a "live documentary." Brilliant.

All best,

Robin's Egg (present moment) (+ mindful practice scholarship)

Private Collection

Lately, I've been painting still life objects that were given to me as gifts. It's so wonderful to receive a gift (like a broken robin's egg) because someone had the thought, "Abbey could paint this!" To me, it means that my work inspires others to see everyday moments as possible paintings -- just as I do.

I paint daily -- and often think and read and write and teach and teach and teach some more about mindful practice as it relates to the studio and to life. To create more awareness, I am working on creating a "mindful practice scholarship" of sorts, which would be funded by voluntary donation (including my own donation, too). The goal would be to reserve mindful practice scholarship subsidized spots in each of my workshops as well as provide funding to subsidize Private Painting Mentoring for interested people. Applicants would send an application consisting of a few questions that relate to the spirit and content of this idea of mindful practice.

On a related note, the feedback about my Innernet course has been phenomenal, and we are planning to offer it again in January 2016. I've gotten a bunch of requests, so I will select a few snippets of course feedback to share here soon.

In the meantime, here's something I often read as it relates to present moment and mindful practice:
"If we have mindfulness and concentration, everything we see and hear in our daily life becomes a Dharma talk -- a falling leaf, a flower as it opens, a bird flying by, the sound of a bird calling. We say that it is the Dharmakaya, the Dharma body of the Buddha, which is always revealing the teaching of the Dharma. When we feel refreshed and attentive, we can be in touch with the Dharma body and hear the Dharma being taught from moment to moment. We shall see that it's not necessary to put a tape in our cassette player and press the button in order to hear the Dharma. We can hear the Dharma at any moment."   ~ Thich Nhat Hanh, Present Moment, Wonderful Moment

It's been years, I think, since I painted a cracked egg painting. A couple of painters in my workshop this past weekend asked me about painting a cracked egg (and other wet things), so I thought I'd revisit this subject as my "Throwback Thursday."

In this painting is a remarkable (and I mean remarkable) handmade bowl I got during my 2013 trip to South Korea. If you're interested, view photos from my travels. Also, the bird's egg in this painting was a gift from one of my Sedona Arts Center workshop participants a couple years ago.

Note: Auction ends at 3:45 PM EST on Tuesday, December 11

Because I deeply admire artists who make handmade pottery, in January 2008, I began my Paintings of Handmade Pottery series as part of my 'painting a day' project. This is an ongoing series -- today's painting is part of it (here it is on my easel).

Lastly, I want to introduce you to Potters for Peace (I donate a portion of each painting sale from my "Paintings of Handmade Pottery" series):
"Potters for Peace offers assistance, with the goal of better livelihoods, to our fellow craftspeople in the developing world. This is done in the belief that international justice and peace can result from respectful friendship and equitable relationships of power and economics. Since 1998, Potters for Peace has been assisting in the production worldwide of a low-tech, low-cost, colloidal silver-enhanced ceramic water purifier (CWP). Field experience and clinical test results have shown this filter to effectively eliminate approximately 99.88% of most water born disease agents." [via Facebook]

This painting is part of my "Paintings of Handmade Pottery" project. Read about it here. This is the same bottle made by Sequoia Miller that I've painted a few times before (Still Life with Fig and Tenmoku Bottle, Still Life with Egg and Tenmoku Bottle, and Still Life with Tomato and Tenmoku Bottle). Unlike those paintings, this painting was done with early morning light.
