"I loved the whole demo. Thank you. Your live demo was wonderful and so generous to us all. I will gladly watch it over and over because there's always something to learn. Knowing something of your technique -- painting with the one brush, controlling amount of paint, using paper to keep brush clean -- it was a great reminder of your what I call controlled painting freedom. Of course you're working with lots of past knowledge, but to see the image appear, so quickly, clearer and clearer, was exciting, really. I absolutely mean it that I will watch it again and again. What a gift to your followers."

On Friday, Nov 2, I conducted a live painting demonstration in Grey Towers Castle at Arcadia University. The event was open to the public and streamed live in HD at arcadia.edu/livepaint. This painting (and my live demo) honors the memory of my friend, Jami. The painting is larger than my typical auction paintings and all proceeds from this auction will be donated to the Jami Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship at Arcadia. Read more. Also, if you look closely, there's one of my self portrait of sorts down the middle of the pitcher's reflections.

Last month, I taught a workshop at one of my favorite places: the John F. Peto Studio Museum. If you're not familiar, John Frederick Peto (1854-1907), born in Philadelphia, was a late nineteenth-century figure in the trompe l'oeil school of American still life painting. The Peto Museum is a renowned and memorable studio museum about 2 hours east of Philadelphia where I live and work.

The Museum again invited me to use Peto's still life objects in my painting demonstration during this year's workshop (I painted Peto's copper jug in 2013 and his salt-glazed mug in 2015).

I chose Peto's blue and white ceramic creamer. There is a painting at the museum in which Peto himself painted this blue and white ceramic creamer. If you're interested, Peto's painting of this same creamer, along with the creamer itself!, is to the right and also pictured in this 2013 New York Times article.

As I was setting up my still life, it was cool thinking that Peto held this very object in his hands, too. Setting up one of Peto's still life objects in my own still life set up was an incredible experience.

I'll post a bit soon about how my #digitaldetox online course "The Innernet" at Viva Institute turned out, but since I am preparing for a solo show in August, I have pretty much stayed "off the grid" since the Innernet course. Also, I did today's painting in Sedona and will also post soon about my workshop there and travels in Sedona and Patagonia last month.

In the meantime, I wanted to share this awesome free event, VIVA Radio's Dinner and a Movie, which is both on and off the grid at Viva Institute -- and such a great idea on many levels.

Some News
I have told just a few of my collectors this, but I wanted to let you know that I injured my knee two weeks ago. Not being able to paint (or go running and to my favorite Zumba class) is always difficult, but I am doing much better now! The head of UPenn Sports Medicine ordered an MRI for me for next week to make sure there are no tears, so after that I can begin a more active recovery. Please send positive thoughts that I won't need surgery! : )

In other news, my Nov. 8-9 Peto Museum workshop is already more than half full. If you're thinking about it, register today to reserve your spot. I am also teaching in Yardley on September 13. After that, my next workshop will be May 18-22, 2015 in Sedona (save the date).

My recent Sedona Arts Center workshop was off-the-charts AMAZING. What an incredible group of painters! I am writing a couple of posts about that, along with my paintings from Arizona. I will also share some responses/testimonials from some of the fabulous workshop participants. Look for that next week. In the meantime, snapshots from the week are here.

Golden Series
Since I introduced the series in August 2012, I've been periodically making paintings that are part of what I refer to as my Golden Series. This is the third Golden Series painting I've done lately, although I am often thinking about the works by Dutch painters Rachel Ruysch, Caspar Netscher, and Abraham Mignon (all of which I studied at the Uffizi in Florence).

Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of my blog, and I painted this in the afternoon light (it's the third painting in my new Golden Series). I think the afternoon light in my studio is particularly powerful because it reflects some of the Schuylkill River light.

FRAMED VIEW

Golden Series: Strawberries, Blueberries, and Two Figs (+ Artist Charlie Ritchie)

Earlier this spring, I attended an inspiring lecture given by artist Charles Ritchie (he's also Associate Curator of Modern Prints and Drawings at National Gallery of Art in Washington DC). In his lecture “34 Years of Keeping a Journal: Notes on a Daily Practice,” Charlie discussed the journals that he's been creating continuously since 1977. These drawings/sketchbooks are inspired by the artist's home, and track his dreams and creative process.

When asked what motivates his daily journaling practice, I admire that Charlie says,

"It’s a great way to get sort of closer to yourself and take time for yourself especially in this kind of modern world where we are so bombarded with such clutter that you know it’s really important that we stop and breathe and look inside and see where we are, who we are, and what we are.

You can see it as meditation or even exercise. It’s a kind of way of exercising one’s mind and inventive capacities and building on them and sharpening them in a way and being more and more in tuned with the world." ~Charles Ritchie, 2012 (source)

As I re-visited his website recently, I particularly enjoyed "Conversation with the Artist in his Studio" and I highly recommend it. Three-quarters of the way down the page, Charlie comments on "looking at the overlooked" (source) and how his works "resonate with familiarity for the viewer." As a long-time Morandi fan, his response piqued my interest: "Morandi repeatedly painted a group of objects with very slight changes. He was dealing with various internal states, and he projected not only his own experience but the universe upon those objects."

Finally, here's one of my favorite Ritchie passages:

"My art makes me ask questions, and I hope it makes others ask questions. There's much more here than we let ourselves to see, more that what we assume is here. I am commenting on my world and myself." ~Charles Ritchie, 1992 (source)
