If you're interested, here's an excerpt from a recent email I got from a collector of my work:

"I have a friend who is a painter and I have 4 of her paintings, a series named The Singers. The paintings are of an amazing opera singer performing on stage. My friend tried to paint what she saw in the opera singer's performance. She told me that the opera singer's voice and performance captured 'the great all.' Dear Abbey, your work feels that way to me—it captures the 'great all.'" 

On a related note, I often get emailed questions about selling artwork online. It's such a multi-layered and complex topic that I find it's easier to discuss in person in my workshops/seminars or mentoring program. As much as possible, I try to share with others the ways in which the internet enables artists to thrive. There are so many of avenues for artists, and the best one(s) depend on who you are. For me: in addition to juried exhibitions, museums, and galleries, since 2007 I've sold my small paintings on eBay because it's a universal and easy-to-use auction platform that allows me to share my work with collectors all over the world. As a result, my work is in more than 1300 private and public art collections on six continents. There are many other selling platforms, but eBay is what I've always used; plus, four years ago, I posted that Sotheby's initiated a partnership with eBay.

Still Life with Bird's Egg, Apple with Leaves, and Ike's Handmade Vase (+ update on auctions)

Back in May, I asked for your comments on using auction sites. Thank you for all your replies! The overwhelming response was that eBay auctions are the easiest. However, if you don't use eBay, I usually have a small group of available non-auction paintings. Email me to inquire.

Anyway, there were a few questions regarding last minute bidding. I think the best answer is that eBay has a built-in proxy system that allows bidders to enter their pre-determined maximum bid. All you do is enter your maximum bid and let the auction proceed. From eBay's site: "If the auction ends for less than your maximum, that's all you'll have to pay. eBay will only use as much of your bid as necessary to win. Just enter your highest maximum bid once, and eBay will take care of the bidding for you." One comment I received about max bids was this: "stick what you are willing to pay as a hidden max bid and be done with it." That said, if you're interested, another commenter told me that eBay does allow people to use online auction "sniping" sites to assist them with end-of-auction bidding. I have never used one, so do your due diligence if you decide to try it.

An Article to Share (Sotheby's and eBay)

I offered my very first "A Painting a Day" painting for sale on eBay on Sept. 23, 2007, and I've continued to do this for almost seven years.

This week's New York Times article reports that "Sotheby’s, the blue-chip auction house, and eBay, the Internet shopping giant, plan to announce that they have formed a partnership to stream Sotheby’s sales worldwide. Starting this fall, most of Sotheby’s New York auctions will be broadcast live on a new section of eBay’s website."

In the article, under a photo of a Sotheby's Andy Warhol auction, the caption reads: "By teaming up with eBay, it hopes to reach buyers who might never come to a sale room."

This has been my experience, too. I'm very grateful I've been able to share my work with art collectors on six continents, and I continue to be in awe of the ways in which the internet enables artists to thrive.
