Still Life with Silver Creamer, Clementine, and Cranberries (Live Demo Painting)

Still Life with Silver Creamer, Clementine, and Cranberries (Live Demo Painting)
4x6 inches, oil on linen on panel, 1 December 2020
Thank you for tuning in to my live demo yesterday. So many artists from around the world, friends, family, Arcadia students, alums, faculty, staff, and administrators watched and live chatted. If you're interested, here is a comment from someone who tuned in: "She just keeps making it better and better and better to infinity. There is nobody past or present who surpasses Abbey’s talent and incredible ability to recreate reality without ever uttering a curse or throwing a brush across the room. I am in eternal awe of her talent and demeanor. She gives new meaning to masterpiece."

If you missed it: on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, I conducted my annual live painting demonstration in my studio (instead of Grey Towers Castle at Arcadia University). The event was free and streamed live online. This painting (and my live demo) honors the memory of my friend, Jami. The auction is now live and will last for 7 days. All proceeds will be donated to the Jami Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship at Arcadia. Read more.

I'll post photos on Facebook and Instagram and check back because I'll be adding more. Also, if you look closely, there's a self portrait of sorts down the middle of the silver creamer's reflections. I invite you to watch the short time lapse of the two hour live demo:

Thank you so much for all of your wonderfully kind emails while I recovered from pneumonia. I'm finally feeling well enough to paint again, though I'm very aware that I still need to take it easy. It's so good to be back. : )

Special Announcement

I'm pleased to announce my annual live painting demo. Next Friday, April 1st, I'm conducting a live demonstration of my daily painting in Grey Towers Castle at Arcadia University from 11am to 1pm EST.

The session is free and open to the public for anyone who can come person, and the event will be streamed live at http://www.arcadia.edu/livepaint (Arcadia's UStream channel).

The demo painting will be posted on my blog and sold by auction, with the proceeds to benefit the Jami Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship at Arcadia. Jami and I became friends as art students and members of Arcadia's (Beaver's) Student Alumni Association together, and I remember her as an amazing artist and magnetic friend. I'd like to raise awareness about this Scholarship to honor Jami and her legacy of community service, artistic creativity, and love for Beaver College (Arcadia).

Arcadia's Castle is a fantastic historic landmark. I hope that you will consider joining me next Friday!

Two Cranberries, Two Tangerines (Yin & Yang) (+ "painting is torment")

Although my students know quite well that I respectfully disagree with him that 'painting is torment,' I thought perhaps you'd be interested in this article about a Cuban artist whose work I studied in 2012 when I visited the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana:

"'All art is tragedy,' Wilfredo Lam said in his halting French. 'For me, painting is a torment.' He was at that moment frantically at work in his little hibiscus-shaded house on the outskirts of Havana. In the back room he uses as his studio, bare but for a profusion of his pictures, he paints every day—or rather, every evening. He usually begins around 11 p.m. after his guests have left, hopping about, lugging his canvas from easel to floor and back again in an acrobatic ballet that sometimes continues till the early morning light filters through the Cuban shutters.

Wifredo Lam, who was born in Cuba in 1902, was one of the very few artists from beyond the borders of the American and European art worlds to become a genuine star in those locales in the middle part of the 20th century...." [Read more at source]

Also: looking back, I find I often paint cranberries and tangerines around this time of year. This painting continues my "yin and yang" series that I began back in 2010.

I wanted to share a quote I've been thinking about lately:
If "How much is enough?" is the subversive question for the consumer society, "How can I hear my own heart?" is the key assault on the Information Age."
~ Bill McKibben, in his Introduction to Thoreau's Walden
Workshop updates
My March 28-29 Artists of Yardley workshop has a few spots left, I think, and my May 18-22 Sedona Arts Center workshop has 1 spot left.

Golden Series: Tangerine, Horse chestnuts, & Cranberries

I sometimes paint a self portrait of sorts in the reflections on my shiny still life objects, but this is the first time I've painted my hand in the process of painting, as it is reaching towards my canvas and closer to the object. Can you see it?

This is the fourth painting in my Golden Series, and I continue to think about the works by Dutch painters. Since I introduced the series in August 2012, I periodically make paintings that are part of what I refer to as my Golden Series, paying homage in my own way to such painters as Rachel Ruysch, Caspar Netscher, and Abraham Mignon (all of which I studied at the Uffizi in Florence).

If you haven't yet, please take this quick 3-question survey. I am getting tons of similar responses and would welcome your input also.

If you enjoy it, share this painting using the links below or use this little click to tweet.

Best,

I will be posting a new painting auction every day for the next 10 days. This is the first.

Since some auctions will last only 24-hours, and some will last 7-days: if you wish to give a painting as a gift, I can email you a "certificate" to present in place of the actual painting (until it's dry).

If you're interested, view all my Current Painting Auctions and Available Paintings.

Enjoy,

Blue and White Sake Cup with Cranberries and Eucalyptus

    Abbey Ryan painting

This sake cup and eucalyptus branch are two favorite subjects of mine. I'm not sure why, but this painting takes me back to an amazing Sonia Sanchez lecture that I attended in March at Arcadia University. Ms. Sanchez is the Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, and I feel so fortunate that I was able to hear her speak. She recited several poems, recounted her memories of Audre Lorde, and spoke about peace, poetry, life, and the value of teaching children how to really breathe. Her words were moving and have stayed with me.

I tried to jot down some notes so that I would not forget it all. I absolutely love one thought that she shared about our hearts and minds, but I can't seem to figure out a way to explain it here. Instead, I'll just share a great quote that Ms. Sanchez talked about:
"The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers."      -James Baldwin (1924-1987)
I would encourage all of you to read more about this remarkable woman here and at her web site. I also just found her on Facebook here!

I love hear your thoughts on Ms. Sanchez, or poetry, or the purpose of art.... Click here to leave me a comment.
