Two Bosc Pears with Bird's Egg (+ Mozart's daily routine)

This painting is available for a buy now/make offer price because it is larger than my typical auction paintings. Framing is available upon request after auction closes.

Related to my postings on mindful studio practice, I often read renowned writer Maria Popova's work (my previous mentions here).

Here's a bit from her piece on Mozart’s Daily Routine: 'How a day is composed in the hours between sleep o’clock and symphony o’clock.'

"'The patterns of our lives reveal us. Our habits measure us,' Mary Oliver wrote in contemplating how our routines give shape to our inner lives. This, perhaps, is why we’re so transfixed by the daily routines of great artists, writers, and scientists — a sort of magical thinking under the spell of which we come to believe that if we were to replicate the routines of geniuses, we would also replicate some dimension of their inner lives and, in turn, their outer greatness....

"[Mozart:] I am writing this at eleven at night, because I have no other leisure time. We cannot very well rise before eight o’clock, for in our rooms (on the ground-floor) it is not light till half-past eight. I then dress quickly; at ten o’clock I sit down to compose till twelve or half-past twelve, when I go to Wendling’s, where I generally write till half-past one; we then dine. At three o’clock I go to the Mainzer Hof (an hotel) to a Dutch officer, to give him lessons in galanterie playing and thorough bass, for which, if I mistake not, he gives me four ducats for twelve lessons. At four o’clock I go home to teach the daughter of the house. We never begin till half past four, as we wait for lights. At six o’clock I go to Cannabich’s to instruct Madlle. Rose. I stay to supper there, when we converse and sometimes play; I then invariably take a book out of my pocket and read…" [Keep reading]

Pear and Bumble Bee (+ reverence for living things)

"I do have a great reverence for life, and living things, and I think that I can draw things with that reverence." ~Tomie dePaola

If you're interested, that quote is from this video interview with Tomie dePaola about his recent children's book, Quiet. Kerry Weber's review of the book reads: Quiet "serves as both a meditation and an invitation.... In Quiet there is more sage advice for children. As they walk through nature, the grandfather makes a suggestion to the grandchildren: 'Let’s not be so busy. Why don’t we sit here, you next to me?' The final image is the three figures sitting on a bench, looking in the same direction. The scene serves as a beautiful reminder of what it means to be present to one another..."

Still Life with Golden Pears and Pussy Willow (+ a symbol of good will)

Pussy willows always remind me of my grandmother. "Although many willows are associated with sadness, the pussy willow flower is thought to symbolize good will and motherhood. They are also thought to represent protection for the home, and are frequently given as gifts to new homeowners. Although these blossoms can be given fresh, they are best presented dry, where their unique beauty can be kept in the home indefinitely." [via flowerinfo.org]

Pear with Snow and Self Portrait Reflected in Silver Cup (+ "the paths that birds make")

My new studio is on the 3rd floor, and the view is inspiring. In this cup's reflections, you can see me in my new painting hat (it's cold in my studio) and snow on the ground with late afternoon light coming through the distant trees.

In addition to my oil paintings, I also make large ink paintings on paper (if you're interested in seeing some, click here). One in particular, which consists of two 35 x 42 in. panels and usually hangs in my living room, was partially inspired by a murmuration, or flock of starlings. In light of that, I just have to share this Jan. 2018 National Geographic magazine article, "If Birds Left Tracks in the Sky, They’d Look Like This." It features amazing works by Barcelona-based photographer Xavi Bou. Prepare yourself and click the link. (Note: There's a slideshow at the bottom of the article with 16 images.)

24-hour auction ends at 7:30PM EST on Tues, Oct 17

This is the 14th painting in my Golden Series. The pear and concord grapes came from my in-laws' beautiful farmer's market in Fairport, NY. Also, I'm always grateful to our local co-op for working with local farmers to offer the beautiful fruit I often paint, and this painting especially was inspired by Weaver's Way Co-op.

If you're interested, Philadelphia-artist Matthew Borgen's current solo exhibition is worth a visit. Cities in the Sky is an exhibition of new digital prints by Matthew Borgen on view at the Barbara Crawford Gallery on the campus of the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy through April 2017. "The works in this exhibition utilize visual language and common metaphors from comics, sequential art, and science fiction to discuss issues surrounding the notion of cultural bubbles." You can see some of his work and find out more details here.

Bosc Pear in Morning Light (Winter Solstice 12/22/15) (+ Susan Werner)

I had the pleasure of sitting in the front row at Susan Werner's most recent concert at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia. It was -- as usual -- utterly fantastic. If you're not familiar, please take some time to get to know Susan's musical genius here. (And I posted a couple of my front-row photos here.)

Special Post: Silent Auction Fundraiser (+ Tangerine ending)

My oil painting and ink painting (below) will be available today and tomorrow, December 10th and 11th, in a Silent Auction at Arcadia University -- my alma mater and where I teach. You may recall that Arcadia is where I conduct my annual Live Painting Demos in Grey Towers Castle (which was designed in 1893 by Horace Trumbauer, the famous architect who also designed the Philadelphia Museum of Art among many other historic buildings).

Still Life with Bosc Pear in a Cloisonné Butterfly Bowl
7 x 6 inches, oil on linen on panel, framed, 2015

Following the theme of painting things that were given to me, I always enjoy painting this cloisonné butterfly bowl that belonged to my grandmother and was a gift to me from my dad. This painting, along with 15 others, is on view this month as part of my solo exhibition at Gleason Fine Art in Maine. Hope you enjoy the new work.

Bosc Pear in North Light (upcoming announcement!)

(auction includes framed view)

I shared last month that I am working on a project that is quite important and exciting to me, and I believe I'll be ready to announce it next week. (I'll announce it first to my email list, so if you're interested, add yourself here.)

I actually shared some of the details with the participants in my recent workshop, so I will share a bit here: I'm creating a one-week e-course that will include two live lecture tele-seminars for all those enrolled in the course (and participants will be able to call in to talk with me live).

The topic is something I am deeply passionate about in my own life and work -- and something that I often discuss with many of my workshop participants. The e-course format will enable many more of you to join in.

I found this amazing handmade bowl during my 2013 painting trip to South Korea, and this is my first time painting it. Also, if you look closely, there's one of my self portrait of sorts down the middle of the bowl's reflections.

If you missed it last week, I posted a few photos of my new studio, including two views of my incognito studio "office."

Enjoy,

Bosc Pear (The Green Stripe - La Raie Verte)

Private Collection

The painting references Henri Matisse's The Green Stripe (La Raie Verte), also known as Portrait of Madame Matisse -- a famous portrait by Matisse of his wife, Amélie Noellie Matisse-Parayre. He painted it in 1905.

Last week when I posted Pomegranate in Last Light, I shared a bit about my new studio and the light it has in late afternoon and last light. I loved your email replies about this topic.

Since it relates to this conversation about daylight and last light, I wanted to share my favorite app on my phone: Sunset and Sunrise. I have only a few apps on my phone, but I like this one. It tells me exactly how long it is until sunset, as well as last light. It also includes the exact percentage that daylight is completed. I sometimes find it useful and fun when I am deciding what and when I want to paint.
