Peeled Tangelo on Stacked Wood Blocks (+ Merton at Georgian Court)

This painting can be paired with my painting yesterday:

When I posted previously about my parents' forthcoming children's book about Thomas Merton, I got many great emails/responses. Two Satsuma Tangerines (+ artwork of hope, love, and support)

Two Satsuma Tangerines, 6 x 8 inches, oil on linen on panel, 2016.
Available - email abbeyryan@gmail.com for purchase information

The tagline for A Mighty Girl is "the world's largest collection of books, toys and movies for smart, confident, and courageous girls." Recently, their blog posted "Artwork of Hope, Love, and Support from the Children's Book World." It begins:

"Over the past few days, children's book illustrators have been creating images featuring their beloved characters coupled with messages of love and support. Many of these images show their characters with a safety pin (#KidLitSafetyPin), others show the characters hugging (#HugsfromKidLit), but all are symbols to kids feeling vulnerable or being targeted with harassment that they are not alone -- that they are loved and valued. Moreover, these drawings, which the artists hope teachers and librarians will post in schools, send an important message to all students that now is the time to come together with friends and classmates to stand against any hateful speech or actions motivated by differences in gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, country of origin, or ability."

"Along with sharing these messages of love, hope, and solidarity with children, author Kate Messner also expressed the importance of taking the next step: 'If this is something you plan to share with students, please also take time to talk about what it means to have someone's back when it comes to fighting bullying and bigotry. Wearing a safety pin (or putting up a poster) doesn't really help unless it's accompanied by a promise of action. Speaking up and standing beside people who are being targeted requires courage, commitment, and planning. Here's a resource [from the Southern Poverty Law Center]....'" Best,

Partially Peeled Lemon (present moment)

The last time I painted a partially peeled lemon was in 2010, and that painting, Still Life with Peeled Lemon and Temmoku Bottle, was also featured in O, the Oprah Magazine. If you're interested, you can see that article here.

As I mentioned last week, I am working on an important project, and until I am ready to announce it (hopefully later this month), here's another something I am reading:
"The Mangroves"
As I said before, I am living now
in a warm place, surrounded by
mangroves. Mostly I walk beside
them, they discourage entrance.
The black oaks and the pines
of my northern home are in my heart,
even as I hear them whisper, "Listen,
we are trees too." Okay, I'm trying. They
certainly put on and endless performance
of leaves. Admiring is easy, but affinity,
that does take some time. So many
and so leggy and all of them rising as if
attempting to escape this world which, don't
they know it, can't be done. "Are you
trying to fly or what?" I ask, and they
answer back, "We are what we are, you
are what you are, love us if you can."
~ Mary Oliver, Blue Horses, p. 35
As the auction for my painting, Clementine with Stem on Marble, ends tonight at 7PM EST -- and it's snowing in blizzard-like fashion right now in Philadelphia -- I am reminded that there was a blizzard outside in Perugia, Italy, when I last painted a clementine with stem on a marble (in March 2009). Hopefully it won't be snowing this spring when I'll be traveling and painting in Assisi and Rome to study Baroque art.

Enjoy,

Two Tangerines (+ a glimpse of my studio safety gear)

Private Collection

I teach about it in my workshops -- but I often get many email questions about this topic -- so I thought I'd post a few health precautions that I've adopted. (These are things I have researched myself and that work for me.)

Here I am (to the right) in my gear for varnishing my paintings. I use a spray varnish, so my safety protocol varnishing includes the following:
  1. Know the material (research the MSDS for the varnish)
  2. Only spray varnish outdoors (be careful about heat and humidity)
  3. Wear an appropriate P-series organic vapor cartridge respiratory mask
  4. Wear protective gear so the vapors do not absorb into skin, clothes, hair, etc. This includes goggles, gloves, suit, and mask. (My suit has a hood, which I normally do wear, just not in this photo.)
  5. Research and follow proper OSHA Handling, Storage, and Disposal
  6. Find a local Approved Chemical Waste Facility
I know I haven't gone into too much depth here, but I hope this is helpful!

Enjoy,

Still life with John F. Peto's Copper Jug, Clementine, and Concord Grapes (+ Peto Museum Workshop Recap)

Collection of the Peto Museum

Two weeks ago, I taught a workshop at one of my favorite places: the John F. Peto Studio Museum.

I'm a bit speechless about all aspects of the experience painting and teaching at the Peto Museum, but setting up one of Peto's still life objects in my own still life set up was by far the highlight for me. Painting Peto's copper jug was surreal, and at the same time I felt grounded in his studio space and deeply connected to his artistic energy. It was truly an honor.

If you're interested, I found photos of a couple of Peto's paintings of the jug that I painted. Below is his painting "Pots and Pans" from c. 1880, which I found in the catalog Important Information Inside: The Art of John F. Peto and the Idea of Still-Life Painting in Nineteenth-Century America, by John Wilmerding, Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art, 1983. The exhibition featured sixty-one paintings by John F. Peto.

Here are photos of my painting demo, more of Peto's paintings, and the workshop.

Tomorrow, I'll post my other demo painting for auction and a bit more about the workshop.

Two other related thoughts:

1- My three latest trompe l'oeil paintings are on view at the Peto Museum through the end of December 2013. Here is a preview of the exhibition and artist reception.

2- In case you missed it, Art & Antiques Magazine published a fabulous article about the Peto Museum in last month's issue.
