Sunset Reflected in Brandy Snifter (present moment)

Today's painting gives a bit more of a glimpse of the view out my new studio window. If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see other paintings from my "present moment" series. Also, this brandy snifter was given to me as a gift -- follow that link to see some of my still life paintings that were inspired by the generosity of others.

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see paintings from my "present moment" series, or some other paintings of sunsets, Schuylkill River Reflections at Sunset (2009), or a bunch of my paintings of things that were given to me.

Antique Wire-rimmed Glasses No. 3 (+ Skyspace)

This is my third time painting these awesome antique wire-rimmed glasses that I found at a market in Woodstock, NY; if you look closely there's a self portrait of sorts in the reflection (here are a bunch of other reflection self portraits, too).

If you haven't seen it, the Chestnut Hill Skyspace is now open again and allows visitors to enjoy the tranquility of sunrise and sunset below James Turrell’s mesmerizing lights. It is open every Sunday at sunset, every First Friday at sunset, and every First Sunday 50 minutes before sunrise (a completely different piece, and very much worth getting up early for).

Bosc Pear (The Green Stripe - La Raie Verte)

Private Collection

The painting references Henri Matisse's The Green Stripe (La Raie Verte), also known as Portrait of Madame Matisse -- a famous portrait by Matisse of his wife, Amélie Noellie Matisse-Parayre. He painted it in 1905.

Last week when I posted Pomegranate in Last Light, I shared a bit about my new studio and the light it has in late afternoon and last light. I loved your email replies about this topic.

Since it relates to this conversation about daylight and last light, I wanted to share my favorite app on my phone: Sunset and Sunrise. I have only a few apps on my phone, but I like this one. It tells me exactly how long it is until sunset, as well as last light. It also includes the exact percentage that daylight is completed. I sometimes find it useful and fun when I am deciding what and when I want to paint.

Still Life with Pear and Silver Cup at Sunset (+ Musings on my Sedona Workshop)

Available - Email me for purchase information

I'm happy to share with you that my painting, Spring Onions from Red Earth Farm, is on the cover of the Sedona Arts Center catalog. If you click the link, my workshop is on page 7. I'm especially honored because my painting was also on the cover of their 2011-12 catalog.

Speaking of Sedona, one of my wonderful students (and Private Painting Mentoring participants) wrote about her time in my workshop last year:

"I am having so much fun at Abbey Ryan's Sedona workshop! Sedona is breathtaking. And what can I say about Abbey? I could sing her praises for hours, but in one word? Simply put, she is amazing. I'm pretty sure she has magical powers."

"...I am still thinking about Abbey's magical brushwork, and I will forever. If you have a chance to attend one of her workshops, please do. Her incredible talent, gentle nature and fun sense of humor make for an unforgettable experience. It was a great week!" ~D. McDowell

I encourage you to check out Darla's recent work on her blog -- and leave her a comment while you're there.

Still Life with Pear and Silver Cup at Sunset (+ Spain Travels & Paintings)

Still Life with Pear and Silver Cup at Sunset
5 x 4 inches, oil on linen on panel, framed, 2013
Available
Email me for purchase information

I recently returned from Spain, and tomorrow I'll begin posting the paintings I did there. I spent most of my time in Barcelona and Montserrat. I'm sorting through photos, which I will post on Facebook soon. Join me there to see those.

To start, here is a photo of my first painting on my easel in Spain. If you can make it out in the photo, I'm painting a still life of a pair of sardines! I got them from Barcelona's Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, or 'La Boqueria' for short. One of Barcelona's most well-known landmarks, it's a large public market that was one of my all-time favorite places in Barcelona.

When I post the sardines painting and auction tomorrow, I'll also post photos of my adventures in La Boqueria, where I saw the fish and couldn't resist buying some to paint! The last time I painted fish was over ten years ago, but I enjoyed it so much that I may visit Philly's Reading Terminal Market soon to find more fish to paint...

If you're interested, view all my Available Paintings.

Enjoy,
