Magnolia No. 1

A huge magnolia branch came down in my neighbor's yard two nor'easters ago, but on the bright side, we've been really enjoying the gorgeous flowers indoors. This is my first time painting magnolias. Anyway, with our fourth nor'easter behind us here in Philadelphia, a Ramones song came to mind:

"Chewing out a rhythm on my bubble gum
The sun is out and I want some."
[Listen/watch the live performance of "Rockaway Beach"]

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see a bunch of my paintings of flowers or read about other music I've posted in the past.

Pomegranate in Last Light (+ Steve Reich at 80: Still Plugged In, Still Plugging Away)

If you're interested, "Steve Reich at 80: Still Plugged In, Still Plugging Away" is a nice article about the composer Steve Reich and his relationship to technology. Here's an excerpt:

"'There’s no free lunch,' he said, musing on the trade-offs we make with technology. 'Whatever you gain, you have to realize that it's at some cost. And if you're not aware of that, then you are, in a sense, living in what we used to call a fool's paradise.'

Asked about ubiquity of technology today — a time when some even pay good money for someone to take their iPhones away — Mr. Reich responded, 'Well, that's the beauty of the Sabbath.' As an observant Jew, he unplugs every seventh day to take a break himself.

In 2016, when countless secular Americans are finding a need for 'unplugged retreats,' Mr. Reich still seems to have his finger on the pulse of the times...." [Keep reading]

Quince in Late Afternoon Light (+ Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn cover Europe's “The Final Countdown”)

Since it's Friday, I thought I'd share this great video of Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn covering Europe's “The Final Countdown” on The A.V. Club. The youtube description reads, "Yes, it’s only the second week of Undercover 2015, and we’re already looking at our second and third banjos of the season. But behold the power of Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, who took the classic-rock staple “The Final Countdown” and reimagined it for banjos and wig. Yes, when Fleck—who’s been widely recognized as one of the instrument’s greats for decades—showed up at AVHQ, he asked whether we might have a “hair metal” wig for him to wear. Since this is also Onion HQ, we’ve got a whole wardrobe room, and a new look was born. (For her part, Abigail Washburn teased her hair and added a headband.) Fleck took the wig with him, and the duo—whose latest collaboration is called simply Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn—has been playing “The Final Countdown” on the road."

Bosc Pear in Morning Light (Winter Solstice 12/22/15) (+ Susan Werner)

I had the pleasure of sitting in the front row at Susan Werner's most recent concert at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia. It was -- as usual -- utterly fantastic. If you're not familiar, please take some time to get to know Susan's musical genius here. (And I posted a couple of my front-row photos here.)

Summer Peach on a Wood Block (+ news about my knee)

Private Collection

Sharing an inspiring Singer/Songwriter with you
Last weekend, I had the privilege of seeing Susan Werner perform live in concert. The Chicago Tribune named Susan “one of the most innovative songwriters working today” and I wholeheartedly agree. I have many favorite songs of hers, but my current favorite is this one: "May I Suggest" (click the link to see Susan perform it at the Philadelphia Folk Festival in 2010). I'm also inspired by the fact that Susan is the Composer & Lyricist for the upcoming world premier of Bull Durham, The Musical at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. In this great video, Susan and the producers share funny anecdotes about the making of the musical. I'm looking forward to seeing it! (If you enjoy Susan's work, click to tweet it and let her know @swernermusic.)

Good News
shared last month about my knee injury, and I am happy to say that I don't need surgery! (just six weeks of physical therapy.) Thank you for all your kind and supportive emails & comments -- I am so grateful for you!
