Clementine with Stem on Marble (+ Rome travels & Baroque painting)

(auction includes detail and framed views)

I was traveling and painting in Italy the last time I painted a clementine with a stem on a marble surface. It was March 2009 during a mini-blizzard in Perugia.

This May, I will be traveling and painting in Assisi and Rome to study Baroque art. Baroque painters (i.e. Velázquez, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer...) often depicted a dramatic moment using light & dark (chiaroscuro), and I think it is human nature to go towards (the) light. In my own work, I enjoy sharing a way of looking at the world by capturing a moment (of light) as it is happening -- however dramatic or subtle or simple it may be.

Best,

Blue and White Sake Cup (present moment)

I'm enjoying the light in my new studio, and this is one of my favorite cups on my still life objects shelf. I've painted this cup a few times over the years (first time in 2008), but never by itself.

Right now I am creating one of the most amazing projects I've worked on lately, and until I am ready to announce it (probably in March), here's another something I am reading:
"If we have mindfulness and concentration, everything we see and hear in our daily life becomes a Dharma talk -- a falling leaf, a flower as it opens, a bird flying by, the sound of a bird calling. We say that it is the Dharmakaya, the Dharma body of the Buddha, which is always revealing the teaching of the Dharma.
When we feel refreshed and attentive, we can be in touch with the Dharma body and hear the Dharma being taught from moment to moment. We shall see that it's not necessary to put a tape in our cassette player and press the button in order to hear the Dharma. We can hear the Dharma at any moment."

I wanted to share a quote I've been thinking about lately:
If "How much is enough?" is the subversive question for the consumer society, "How can I hear my own heart?" is the key assault on the Information Age."

Workshop updates
My March 28-29 Artists of Yardley workshop has a few spots left, I think, and my May 18-22 Sedona Arts Center workshop has 1 spot left.

Still Life with Korean Bowl & Bosc Pear

I found this amazing handmade bowl during my 2013 painting trip to South Korea, and this is my first time painting it. Also, if you look closely, there's one of my self portrait of sorts down the middle of the bowl's reflections.

If you missed it last week, I posted a few photos of my new studio, including two views of my incognito studio "office."

Red Pear (Yang) (+ thoughts on vision)

Red Pear (Yin) and Red Pear (Yang) together
This is the yang to my earlier Red Pear (Yin), as part of my "yin and yang" series.

If you can see it, I painted a bit of Red Pear (Yin) along the left side of the Red Pear (Yang) canvas. I'll try to share more later, but for now I'll say that since I began studying painting in 2003, I've been interested in glances, how our mind blends fragmented visual experiences, and the synergy at work in vision.

You can see both Red Pears together here:

Workshop update
My March 28-29 Artists of Yardley workshop is more than half full now. If you're considering signing up, you can check out my last Yardley workshop photos. Also, here's some additional feedback about my teaching:
"The best experiences about the workshop with Abbey were: watching Abbey paint, the serenity and shared experience of painting with everyone there, and the permission to immerse myself in the experience and community.  I loved the energy.  And of course Abbey is simply awesome.  When an instructor can show one or two things to a student that improves their work, something the student can take away with them well, what more can you ask for?" -GK
If it's helpful, feel free to read more feedback about my workshops.
