Todi, Italy

3 x 6 in., oil on linen on panel, 19 March 2009
Sold

This is my fifth and final Italy painting. I painted this on a pretty overcast day in Todi, Italy. Even so, there were birds singing loudly down below where I was working. I find that overcast days are great for painting because the low light allows more subtle color shifts to be seen in the landscape. As for this location, Todi is a short bus ride away from Perugia. If you want to see exactly where it is, click here. I think this view is facing in the direction of Orvieto.

Clementine with Stem (Perugia, Italy)

6 x 4 in., oil on linen on panel, 18 March 2009
Sold

I made this painting in Perugia after spending the day in Assisi. Tomorrow I will be posting the fifth (and last) painting from my Italy painting series. I'm also planning to post a couple of short video clips of things that caught my eye in Italy.

View of Assisi, Italy - available

4 x 6 in., oil on linen on panel, 17 March 2009

Email Abbey for purchase information

This is a view I painted of Assisi from Perugia, Italy. (Assisi is the triangular cluster at the far right). It was just about dusk and very cold and windy. I think I was inspired to paint this in part because I knew I'd be visiting Assisi for the first time the following day.

Having been there now, Assisi might be my new favorite place in Italy. I especially enjoyed visiting the Basilica of Saint Clare. And of course the Basilica of Saint Francis -- the experience of the Giotto frescoes there was particularly special because a university choir from Texas gave a short (impromptu) performance while we happened to be in the Upper Basilica.

Creamer (Florence, Italy)

6 x 4 in., oil on linen on panel, 16 March 2009
Sold

This is a little creamer in the breakfast room of our hotel in Florence. I painted this after spending time looking at the amazing Fra Angelico frescoes at Museo di San Marco (this was my favorite place in Florence). This was also the day I held a Pontormo painting in my hands at Count Niccolo Capponi's Palazzo.

Siena, Italy

5 x 6 in., oil on linen on panel, 15 March 2008
Sold

I painted this in Siena next to San Domenico looking southwest. It was late afternoon. Not too far behind me was the football stadium, Stadio Artemio Franchi. While I was painting, Siena was playing what sounded like a very exciting game against Milan. To give you an idea of what I was hearing as I was painting, here's a short clip of David Beckham playing for Milan.

Italy Paintings

I've just returned from Italy. What a great trip!

I completed five paintings (landscape and still life) while I was traveling in Tuscany and Umbria. I plan to post one Italy painting per day beginning tomorrow. I hope you enjoy them...

Trip to Italy

Hi Folks,

I'm off to Italy today with a group of Arcadia University students. This time, I am taking my paints with me to Florence, Siena, Perugia, Assisi, Todi and Spoleto.

I will be back to posting here upon my return. In the meantime, take a look at Daily Painter Review, a new blog created by daily painter Raymond Logan. Raymond reviewed my work and will be reviewing other Daily Painters (so be sure to subscribe to his posts!).

Also, check out the new video in yesterday's post.

Arrivederci!

Trip update

Hi Everyone,

I've been getting lots of emails, so I thought I'd give an update about my trip: I've been stuck in Los Angeles for two extra nights now because of the snow in the Northeast. I'm on a flight tonight, so hopefully I'll be home and back in the studio soon.

Thanks for all your emails. And feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Enjoy.
