This two piece commission is another of my recent large commissions. Click on each image to see a closer view of each 20"x24" painting. I worked closely with the collector on the still life elements and other personal details that they wished to include. 

Stacked Stones (Cairn) No. 3 (present moment)

It's been a little more than 5 years since I stacked stones for a painting. A cairn is a human-made pile (or stack) of stones, and the word cairn comes from middle Gaelic. Since prehistory, they have been built and used as burial monuments. In modern times, cairns are also built as landmarks, for ceremonial purposes, and to mark trails, among other purposes.

This painting (of a cigar, copper tack, cardinal feather, matches, and Vasari's alizarin crimson) is the second in my Golden Ratio series; in 2014 I exhibited my Blue Collection (Golden Ratio), 6 x 7 inches, at the Peto Museum. These tromp l'oeil paintings relate to a series of non-objective ink paintings that I've been working on since 2012 that utilize the structure of the golden ratio. I've been considering the golden ratio as not just a structure (as it is in this painting), but as subject matter in my still life and tromp l'oeil oil paintings.

I would like to recommend a fantastic blog by Caldecott-winning illustrator/author David Wiesner. One entry, entitled "Phone Home," begins like this:

"In 1982, the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was released. History was made.
In 1984, my agent, Dilys Evans, got a phone call from representatives of Steven Spielberg. They were looking for a children’s book illustrator to work on a top-secret project with Mr. Spielberg. They wouldn’t actually say what the subject of the project was, but there were enough hints that Dilys realized it had to do with E.T.
Dilys knew this was perfect for me – I knew film, I knew sci-fi, I knew fantasy, and I knew children’s books. I spent several days putting together a presentation of my work to send to LA...."

Studio Update
As I'm in the happy midst of preparations for my solo exhibition at Mason Fine Art in Atlanta in November, I am also "recovering" from moving my home and studio two weeks ago. (!) Things are finally just about close to being in order in my studio. If you're interested in seeing my beautiful new studio, let me know and I will see if I can take some decent photos of it.

About Today's Painting
This new trompe l'oeil painting of mine relates to a series of non-objective ink paintings that I've been working on since 2012 that utilize the structure of the golden ratio. I've been considering the golden ratio as not just a structure (as it is in today's painting), but as subject matter in my still life and trompe l'oeil oil paintings. More on that later.

In the meantime, if you're in the NJ area, this painting will be on view in the Peto Museum's National Juried Show of Contemporary Trompe L’oeil from September 27 – December 29, 2014. The opening reception is Friday, September 27, 2014 6-8pm. Contact the Peto Museum for details about that.

As I prepare for my Nov. 8-9 Peto Museum workshop - I am excited that I will be able to choose from Peto's objects for my own painting demo still life set up during the workshop.

As I prepare for my Nov. 8-9 Peto Museum workshop - I'm contemplating John F. Peto's remarkable still life objects. The Peto is a Studio Museum, so his objects are placed in situ throughout the space.

I am honored to be able to choose from Peto's objects for my own painting demo still life set up during the workshop. During last year's workshop, I painted Still life with John F. Peto's Copper Jug, Clementine, and Concord Grapes. If you're interested, you can read more about it here and here.

Note:
Friday, August 22nd is the last day to enter the Peto Museum's National Juried Show of Contemporary Trompe L’oeil.

One last thing, about today's painting: I painted a mostly round homegrown tomato in 2007, a pretty green homegrown tomato in 2008, and a quite orange one in 2010. August is tomato season!

Paint tube No. 7 (+ Thoughts on Trompe L'oeil)

This is my first time painting a Vasari paint tube (I love many of Vasari's oil colors -- they are richly pigmented and pure). When I posted today's painting #OnTheEasel on facebook (pictured right), I also remembered the handful of other times I have painted paint tubes.

A Few Thoughts on Trompe L'oeil
For the last three years, I've been intentional about only studying master paintings in real life in museums in NYC, DC, NJ, Philadelphia, and around the world (Italy, Cuba, South Korea, Spain, Brazil, etc). For me, this is a cherished break from the world of the internet.

Today's somewhat "trompe l'oeil-influenced" painting reminds me of my recent visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

So often, I just stop and feel grateful for the amazing things that painting brings into my life. 

In this moment, I'm grateful and excited to announce that my workshop next month at the Peto Museum is now open for registration. The 1.5-day workshop will be held inside the Studio Museum on November 9-10. 

I'm especially honored that I will be using J.F. Peto's own original still life objects for my demo painting.
