Still Life with Cigar and Silver Cup

This cigar is a gift (on loan) from a friend and it's handmade by Ashton in the Dominican Republic. Silver, gold, and nickel are also important exports from the Dominican Republic. #gifts #grateful. Follow this link to see some of my still life paintings that were inspired by generous gifts from people I know.

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see some of my other paintings of cigars or silver items.

Red Collection (Golden Ratio), larger painting (+ David Wiesner's "Phone Home")

Red Collection (Golden Ratio), 2017, oil on panel, 8 x 10 inches
Available

This painting (of a cigar, copper tack, cardinal feather, matches, and Vasari's alizarin crimson) is the second in my Golden Ratio series; in 2014 I exhibited my Blue Collection (Golden Ratio), 6 x 7 inches, at the Peto Museum. These tromp l'oeil paintings relate to a series of non-objective ink paintings that I've been working on since 2012 that utilize the structure of the golden ratio. I've been considering the golden ratio as not just a structure (as it is in this painting), but as subject matter in my still life and tromp l'oeil oil paintings.

I would like to recommend a fantastic blog by Caldecott-winning illustrator/author David Wiesner. One entry, entitled "Phone Home," begins like this:

"In 1982, the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was released. History was made.
In 1984, my agent, Dilys Evans, got a phone call from representatives of Steven Spielberg. They were looking for a children’s book illustrator to work on a top-secret project with Mr. Spielberg. They wouldn’t actually say what the subject of the project was, but there were enough hints that Dilys realized it had to do with E.T.
Dilys knew this was perfect for me – I knew film, I knew sci-fi, I knew fantasy, and I knew children’s books. I spent several days putting together a presentation of my work to send to LA...."

Romeo Y Julieta Cigar (+ Anne Truitt on the Difference Between Doing Art and Being an Artist)

A book worth reading is Anne Truitt's Daybook: The Journal of an Artist, and Maria Popova gives a good taste of it here:

"At the age of fifty-three, the influential artist Anne Truitt (March 16, 1921–December 23, 2004) confronted the existential discomfort any creative person feels in facing a major retrospective of his or her work — the Corcoran Gallery of Art had just staged one of Truitt’s. A retrospective, she felt, forces upon the artist a finite definition — this is what your work is, this who you are. It attempts to make visible and static those invisible, ever-fluid forces that compel an artist to make art.

To tease out her unease, Truitt set out to explore the dimensions of her personality and her creative impulse in a diary, in which she wrote diligently for a period of seven years. It was eventually published as Daybook: The Journal of an Artist — an extraordinary, soul-stretching collection of meditations on the trials, triumphs, and self-transcendence of the creative life...." Cigar (+ still life "gifts")

Following the theme of painting things that were given to me, a friend gave me this cigar as a sort of request/suggestion for a still life object. This is my first time painting a cigar, though I did recently paint a pipe.

If you're interested, I posted many photos from the event (and check back because I'll be adding more), and I invite you to watch the 2 minute time lapse of my live demo:
