Still Life with Two Chocolate Kisses (pink) (+ 2018 workshops)

I'll be announcing 2018 painting workshops soon. In the meantime, if you're interested here are a few reviews from folks who have taken my workshops in the past:

"Anyone who ever meets you and experiences your deep and gentle soul and wonderful teaching skills knows how true this is. You are one in a million.
-ES

"I want to tell you how much I enjoyed meeting you and learning from you. Your technique of sketching in your objects loosely to start is very freeing. Your brushwork and completed works are beautiful. I get such a pleasure from remembering your peaceful nature and inspirational work. Thank you. I look forward to taking another workshop with you."
-PL

"Thank you so much for an outstanding workshop! I really appreciate the time you spent helping me learn so much… and while I feel that I got far more than I expected, I know that there is so much more for me to learn. And this is good because I will never get bored on the never ending journey of exploration & discovery! I hope you are able to come back to teach at Falmouth… we were so very fortunate to have you here this week. And perhaps I will get to one of your workshops in the Philadelphia or NJ area."
-PM

"I am still basking in the memory of your workshop with great joy. I just wanted to thank you again for your gentle way and sincere kindness. Looking forward to receiving my Abbey Ryan demo painting to add to my collection. Such an honor!"
-LS

Best,

Chocolate Kiss, 2018

Related to my postings on mindful studio practice, I sometimes read renowned writer Maria Popova's work (my previous mentions here). In her piece about "Thoreau on the Hubris of Our Knowledge and the Transcendent Humility of Not-Knowing," she writes, "Thoreau’s chief concern is the hubris that knowledge breeds, to which conscious not-knowing offers a counterpoint of humility:

Thoreau: 'My desire for knowledge is intermittent, but my desire to bathe my head in atmospheres unknown to my feet is perennial and constant.'" [Source]

These auctions will last for 3 days and end before noon this Friday. If you send me a note after you win an auction, I can send you a print-quality image of your painting (since it needs a couple more weeks to dry before I can pack and ship).

Handmade Heart Lollipop (+ 1 million visitors)

Click to view auction - 24 hour auction ends at 10 AM EST, Saturday 2/13
Auction has detail and framed views

Thank you. I wanted to take a moment to share my gratitude that my blog site recently surpassed 1 million visits. (It's actually 97,000+ visits beyond a million, but I didn't realize.)

In honor, I thought I'd re-post something I wrote in December 2014 that I hope might inspire you to pursue the things in your life that bring you the most joy:

"Painting for me is about paying attention and capturing a moment. Contemplative paying attention allows me to have an intimate relationship with my still life subjects. This mutual respect and exchange of energy manifests itself as gesture, movement, weight, edges, texture, and color harmony. I carefully choose from my collection of handmade pottery and local co-op produce, and it is magic to me that my subjects can be simultaneously meditative and animated.

Spending time pushing paint around is a way of life. It enriches my heart and mind and soul, and this motivates me to continue painting as often as I do. Seth Godin posted something this week worth considering:

'Daily: There's a fundamental difference between the things you do every day, every single day, and the things you do only when the spirit moves you. One difference is that once you've committed to doing something daily, you find that the spirit moves you, daily. Rather than having a daily debate about today's agenda, you can decide once that you will do something, and then decide every single day how to do it.'"

Eight years later, thank you so much for your loyal and constant support of my work.

Still Life with Three Truffles

I've revisited truffles as a subject several (eight) times since 2008. These were a gift to me from my mom -- not to eat, but to paint. I obviously have no affiliation, but I think they're from Harry and David, if that is of interest to you.

UPDATE:
The official folks at Harry & David excitedly posted/tweeted about my truffles painting on their social media platforms. I thought one of their posts on Twitter was cute: "Meet the Truffles. This is their family portrait..."

Chocolate Truffle, 2013

This is actually a beautiful truffle made by Lake Champlain Chocolates. I don't eat chocolate but I hear they are delicious. The last time I painted truffles was about a year ago and the time before that was in 2010; if you're interested, you can see some of my past truffles paintings here.

My 2014 Workshops
My 5-day workshop for 2014 will be May 19-23 in Sedona. Sedona is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I also will teach three shorter workshops, which completes my workshop schedule. If you're considering a workshop, email me with any questions. I hope to paint with you in 2014.

A Note about my 2014 Workshops
My only 5-day workshop for 2014 will be May 19-23 in Sedona. I know I've said this before, but Sedona is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I also will teach three shorter workshops, which completes my workshop schedule. If you're considering a workshop, email me with any questions. I hope to paint with you in 2014.
