Three Figs II

5 x 6 in., oil on linen on panel
Sold

This is the sister painting to yesterday's Three Figs I, which I used a lamp in my studio to illuminate. This is the same exact set up using natural light from my studio window instead.

I like the warmth of the figs painted with the lamp light, rather than the natural, which is cooler.
They are different, but both lovely.

personnally i think natural light is better, in general. each component of the spectrum is well-represented, it usually reveals form better, and it's balanced much cooler than a lot of incandescents. the last reason is the main reason i use only natural light: too much warmth in a painting can be suffocating.

the colors are so different! but the shadows in the natural light one are deeper and more dramatic, and set off the colors of the figs more, as well as lend a very different air (of mystery!) to the painting. so while i like them both, those elements of this one appeal to me more. but what do you think?!
