Pomegranate with Tenmoku Bottle (the light / the shade)

I've been painting this bottle since before 2009 and the last time I painted it was in November 2020. (The last time I painted a pomegranate was also in 2020.) This bottle is handmade with tenmoku glaze by Sequoia Miller. #potsinaction #paintingsofhandmadepottery

Pomegranate (present moment)

"There isn't time, so brief is life, for bickerings, apologies, heartburnings, callings to account. There is only time for loving, and but an instant, so to speak, for that." ~ Mark Twain

I haven't painted a pomegranate since 2017. If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see my earlier paintings of pomegranates or some of my paintings of red subjects or other paintings from my "present moment" series.

Pomegranate in Last Light (+ Steve Reich at 80: Still Plugged In, Still Plugging Away)

If you're interested, "Steve Reich at 80: Still Plugged In, Still Plugging Away" is a nice article about the composer Steve Reich and his relationship to technology. Here's an excerpt:

"'There’s no free lunch,' he said, musing on the trade-offs we make with technology. 'Whatever you gain, you have to realize that it's at some cost. And if you're not aware of that, then you are, in a sense, living in what we used to call a fool's paradise.'

Asked about ubiquity of technology today — a time when some even pay good money for someone to take their iPhones away — Mr. Reich responded, 'Well, that's the beauty of the Sabbath.' As an observant Jew, he unplugs every seventh day to take a break himself.

In 2016, when countless secular Americans are finding a need for 'unplugged retreats,' Mr. Reich still seems to have his finger on the pulse of the times...." [Keep reading]

Best,

Pomegranate in Last Light No. 2 (+ inspiring you inspires me)

In my 8 year blog post the other day, I wrote a bit about how much my daily paintings are personal to me, my painting practice is a mindfulness meditation, and through my work, I share with you the awe and wonder I feel about beauty that is in our daily lives. It inspires me when my paintings awaken a similar sense of awe and wonder in you, and I wanted to share a note and photo that I just got from a fan and collector of my work:

"Abbey -- this beauty [pictured right] I received yesterday in my CSA basket instantly made me think about you. I hope you are well, healthy and happy!"

I often get emails and comments like that and I always love getting them. Thank you.

Best,

Bosc Pear (The Green Stripe - La Raie Verte)

Private Collection

The painting references Henri Matisse's The Green Stripe (La Raie Verte), also known as Portrait of Madame Matisse -- a famous portrait by Matisse of his wife, Amélie Noellie Matisse-Parayre. He painted it in 1905.

Last week when I posted Pomegranate in Last Light, I shared a bit about my new studio and the light it has in late afternoon and last light. I loved your email replies about this topic.

Since it relates to this conversation about daylight and last light, I wanted to share my favorite app on my phone: Sunset and Sunrise. I have only a few apps on my phone, but I like this one. It tells me exactly how long it is until sunset, as well as last light. It also includes the exact percentage that daylight is completed. I sometimes find it useful and fun when I am deciding what and when I want to paint.

In my new studio (photos coming soon), it's new for me to have natural north light and woods outside my windows. As I am adjusting, I am seeing the potential for deep exploration with the north light. I'm not sure what this means just yet, but I do know that the low light in the late afternoon & last light reminds me of some of my favorite paintings by Rembrandt.

Speaking of which, I was planning to spend time tomorrow with the Old Masters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and then meet up with the folks at Vasari. I came down with a head cold yesterday, so it will happen next month instead. Thank you for your awesome email inquiries about my upcoming visit, and I will be sure to post about my adventures -- I'm fortunate to live so close to NYC.

I'm happy to share with you artwork by Kaytria Stauffer. Kay (a former student of mine) is a multi-talented artist, and she just released a new online exhibition of select jewelry pieces. Kay's work is intricate and complex (both formally and conceptually), so I encourage you to take some time to visit her online "show" here. My favorite piece is pictured here to the right. Enjoy!

Do you Sedona?
I've been to Sedona a few times to teach workshops, but each time I go it feels like a completely new world to me there. While I was there last year, one place I visited for the first time was Amitabha Stupa. I posted a few photos of it here, but it's an indescribable place, really. When I was there it was sunset and breezy, and I spent my time sitting with some curious bunnies.   If you are interested in painting with me this May in Sedona, visit here.

Two weeks ago, I saw my favorite singer, Patty Griffin, in concert at the Kimmel Center. About ten years ago, I met Patty at Tower Records in downtown Philadelphia. I told her, "You're my favorite singer of all time, ever, and my family and I are your biggest fans." She smiled wide and laughed! (Here I am with my dad at the concert.)
