Still Life with Wabi Sabi Korean Bowl and Rainier Cherries

I brought this amazing and unique wabi sabi handmade bowl back with me from South Korea in 2013. The last time I painted it was in 2016. If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see other paintings of what I think of as my "wabi sabi" pottery.

Wabi sabi is not easily described in words, but when I teach my workshops and private painting mentoring online, I often share my thoughts on handmade objects, and the spirit and gesture embedded in them. If you're interested, Wabi-Sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers by Leonard Koren is the seminal 1994 classic volume on the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. This painting is part of my Paintings of Handmade Pottery work, here's another wabi sabi bowl of mine from Patagonia, Arizona, and here's a 2013 post of mine about wabi sabi.

Tart Cherries in a Silver Compote

These cherries were given to me as a gift -- follow that link to see some of my still life paintings that were inspired by the generosity of others.

"My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird—
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is
that we live forever."

"Each human is a complex, contradictory story. Some stories within us have been unfolding for years, others are trembling with fresh life as they peek above the horizon. Each is a zigzag of emotional design and ancestral architecture. All the stories in the Earth's mind are connected."
Joy Harjo, Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings: Poems (2017), photo of book page here

Related to my postings on mindful studio practice, I recommend the work of Joy Harjo, an internationally renowned performer and writer of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. She served three terms as the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States from 2019-2022. Read more at her website.

If you look closely, in the silver creamer you can see my self-portrait reflection of sorts. Here are a bunch of my paintings with self portrait reflections

Still Life with Pohnpeian Cowry Shell, Forelle Pear, and Cherry (+ Artemisia = feminist icon)

"one of the most talented followers of Caravaggio"

"She was one of the great female protagonists of the late-Renaissance art world. Forgotten in the 18th and 19th centuries, she was rediscovered in the 20th as a feminist icon...

"...At the age of 17, [Artemisia Gentileschi] made her debut in the art world with Susanna and the Elders, a daring work that broke Counter-Reformation taboos at a time when female artists were confined to still life and portrait painting."

"...'Florence was intellectually stimulating, Artemisia meets Galileo, and her paintings reflect his discoveries in astronomy. Her talent and erudition grow,' says curator Francesca Baldassari. 'And she becomes the first woman to be admitted to the prestigious academy of design.'"

"...After her death in 1654, Artemisia was forgotten — like Caravaggio. It was not until the 20th century that these late-Renaissance artists were rediscovered and a new appreciation emerged for their Baroque style, with its expressive, non-idealized figures that give viewers a sense of participation in the drama of the scene."

"...A painting by Artemisia was sold at Sotheby's [five] years ago for more than $1 million. But in a sign of a substantial gender gap also in the art market, a painting by her father, Orazio, was bought by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles in January for more than $30 million. And yet, with her intense colors and heroines at the center of dramatic narratives, the daughter's paintings far outshine those of her father." [Source]

Lemons and Cherries from Testaccio Market, Rome (Italy 2017 painting #2)

Most of my time in Rome was spent studying Baroque art and architecture, but I also did three still life paintings and a few drawings. These lemons and cherries were from a market in the Testaccio neighborhood in Rome. It is known as one of the best "classic Roman" markets. You can see some of my photos on facebook or instagram.

If you enjoy this painting, you may also like to see a bunch of my paintings completed in Italy over the years.

Still Life with Cherries on a Delft Plate (+ What is "The Innernet"?)

The philosophy behind "The Innernet" and my motivation for creating it can be found here. During the 1-week retreat, I will host two live calls. You may submit questions in advance and call in to talk with me live. (We’ll be recording the calls in case you can’t make it live.) The heart of the course is your #digitaldetox from the Internet. Unplugging can be nerve-wracking, and how you unplug is up to you. You could turn off mail and social media alerts on your phone so you only access them when you sit down at your computer. You might choose to put your phone in airplane mode. You might want complete Freedom. (Knowing though that it’s possible that you may need to receive text messages or phone calls depending on your profession or situation.) Going offline isn’t an easy thing to do, so you should definitely only do what you can and what feels right to you. The Innernet is meant to be a positive, flexible, rejuvenating, fun experience. Read more here. If you're curious, use coupon code BECURIOUS for $25 off -- and it's even better if you share it with friends/colleagues.

Here's some feedback from the inaugural Innernet class in June 2015:
  • "Abbey’s Innernet class is an enlightening confirmation about practicing your creative practice, without getting distracted by the virtual world, social media, emails, and texts. The true connection is about using your time to create and engage with the people in real life. The class confirms that Abbey's not only a Master Painter, she's a brilliant role model. A gracious thank you to a beautiful soul leading the way!" ~TG
  • "I enjoyed being off line more than words can say. Thank you for offering a course that gives us all permission to disconnect and more importantly reconnect. Absolutely take this class! I think we all just need a reason to give ourselves permission to be still." ~KP
  • "I celebrate your generous spirit and your willingness to share and teach what life has taught you. I printed out your Official Course Packet and find it to be a fantastic resource of contemplative nuggets of wisdom and peace. Thank you for your inspiration and invitation to take my own Innernet journey - no expectations! Hallejulah! Freedom! What a wonderful gift you present -- spoken directly to one's soul!" ~JS

If you have some free time, take a look at What makes a good life? Lessons from the Longest Study on Happiness; there's a video and the article ends with a quote from Mark Twain. More than a century ago, he was looking back on his life, and he wrote this:

"There isn't time, so brief is life, for bickerings, apologies, heartburnings, callings to account. There is only time for loving, and but an instant, so to speak, for that."
